CRISIS INTERVENTION TEAM (CIT)

Training Objectives

At the end of the program, the student will be able to achieve the following objectives in accordance with the information presented in the blocks of instruction, interactive activities, field visits, panels, and role plays:

Increase Knowledge

Increase their knowledge and understanding of the major mental illnesses and to develop an understanding of mental illness, substance use and/or intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Increase Ability

Increase their ability to recognize major symptoms associated with the major mental illnesses.

Emphatic Understanding

Develop an emphatic understanding of the individual in crisis through training modules such as active listening, de-escalation skills and hearing voices that are distressing.

Community Resources

Increase their knowledge of local community resources through field visits in an effort to further help those in a mental health crisis.

Synthesizing Information

Synthesizing learned information during the training within the incorporation of role play activities with constructive guidance and feedback.

Mental Health Topics

Increase their knowledge on various mental health topics such as mental health medications, suicide education and prevention, childhood mental health issues, older adult issues, the effects of trauma through, neurodiversity, substance use disorders and other topics through formal classroom lectures.

Gain Perspective

Gain perspective and increase empathy through interactions of persons with lived experiences and/or families designed to reduce stigma and help first responders see those living with mental illness as people first.
